The fast and easy answer is fast food but that’s only part of the reason many are either overweight or obese. Here are my thoughts as to why.

Industrialization

As our society has moved away from agriculture towards industrialization, we started getting less physical activity. Every new innovation that modernizes us more seems to require us to spend more time in an office, on a computer or on the telephone instead of doing physical activity.

Industrialization also meant we needed a larger work force in a concentrated area. This meant our food had to be transported longer distances to reach the consumer and that necessitated refrigeration and preservatives to ensure a longer shelf life.

Population Growth

Our population has increased dramatically over the years and this means we need to grow more food in less space. To accomplish this, fertilizers have been used that contain enough nutrients for the plant to grow quickly but not all they need to be as nutritious as they should be because that would push the production cost too high.

Lifestyle Changes

Several decades ago, people watched a few prime time television shows and that was the extent of the sitting for many. The adults would often go for a walk after the evening meal and the kids usually found an outdoor activity  to enjoy until dark if the weather allowed it.

If families have time to sit down to a meal together today, it is often fast food that was delivered or a premade meal that was bought at the deli. As soon as the meal is over, the kids are off to watch TV, play video games, get on the Internet or do schoolwork. The adults usually have housework, work they brought home from work or they’re too tired to do anything but watch TV.

Conclusion

With the prepackaged foods, fast foods and supersized servings people consume there is an uphill battle to control their weight. Add a sedentary lifestyle and stress to the less than ideal food choices and you can easily understand why many people are either overweight or obese.
